Call for Papers – Workshop

Workshop: On the Intersection Between Fossil and Renewable Energies

Scope

Fossil fuels are important energy sources that play vital roles in the energy system and economies of African countries. They are a major source of revenue for the leading oil and gas producing countries in Africa and the vast reserves of fossil fuels in the continent provide Africa with great opportunities to improve energy access, accelerate economic growth and reduce poverty. Despite this, the continent is still faced with enormous energy challenges that include low access to modern energy, insufficient energy infrastructure, low efficiency and lack of institutional and technical capacity to use these huge resources. Moreover, there are concerns that the future of fossil fuel use will need to take place in the context of a low carbon development pathway.

On the other hand, renewable energy has recently been gaining attention in Africa due to several reasons: high volatility and increasing prices of fossil fuels, a world that is going more and more green, cost-effective options provided by off-grid energies, and more importantly, the region is also endowed with significant amount and variety of renewable energy resources. Cleaner energy systems mitigate and even neutralize the adverse consequences of the use of fossil fuels and permit their positive qualities to be enjoyed for economic and social development.

Therefore, while it is necessary for Africa to leverage its potentials for clean energy in a world that is becoming more demanding for green energy, it is also vital to the continent to better exploit its natural resources to address urgent development needs and poverty reduction. It is therefore important to explore the resource and technical challenges and opportunities associated with developing Africa’s potentials in fossil fuels in a world that is going more and more green.

We invite unpublished contributions and innovations that address issues at the intersection of fossil and renewable
energies.

This workshop will be co-located with the third edition of the EAI International Conference on Innovations and Interdisciplinary Solutions for Underserved Areas (InterSol2019) to be held on February 14-15, 2019 in Cairo, Egypt.
